The zebra saber-toothed mucous fish has strongly elongated canine teeth in its lower jaw which, like all meiacanthus species, are provided with poison glands. The saber-toothed mucous fish uses its venom glands effectively for defense, the carer should be aware that a bite of the saber-toothed mucous fish has a pain comparable to that of a bee sting.
